Building Hope Through Education in Yemen

Project Overview

The Sana Foundation School Project represents a transformative investment in education for one of Yemen’s most vulnerable communities. Located in the Al-Sharekah Neighborhood of Mareb City, this comprehensive school construction initiative has created a beacon of hope for children who previously studied in makeshift tents under harsh conditions.

Location: Al-Sharekah Neighborhood, Mareb City, Yemen
Duration: 6 months (November 2024 – April 2025)
Investment: $120,877
Beneficiaries: 648 families (approximately 684 students at full capacity)

What We Built

6 modern classrooms (4×7 meters each) with proper ventilation and lighting
Administrative office fully equipped for school management
4 sanitation facilities (3 for students, 1 for staff)
Secure perimeter fencing creating a safe learning environment
Student corridors and staircase ensuring safe movement throughout the facility

• 108 joint school desks (18 per classroom)
• 6 fiber whiteboards for effective teaching
• Complete administrative furniture including desk, chair, and sofas
• 13 ceiling fans for optimal comfort
• Modern audio-visual equipment including speakers, microphones, and computers
• Laptop for administrative use

From Tents to Classrooms: The most profound impact of this project lies in the transformation of children’s educational experience. Students who once endured scorching heat and bitter cold in improvised tent classrooms now learn in proper, climate-controlled environments designed for education.

Educational Capacity: The school operates on a dual-shift system:

Morning shift: 342 students
Afternoon shift: 342 students
Total capacity: 684 students across both shifts

Sustainable Education: Built with reinforced concrete and designed for permanence, this school will serve the community for generations. Our projections show:

684 students graduating over the first three years
Ongoing enrollment maintaining full capacity through continuous intake
Community stability through improved educational infrastructure

Breaking the Cycle: This project addresses critical challenges:

• Reduces severe overcrowding in existing schools caused by displacement
• Eliminates financial burden on families who would otherwise pay for private education
• Creates local employment opportunities for teachers and maintenance staff
• Promotes peace and tolerance through quality education

The joy and wonder in children’s eyes as they entered their new classrooms for the first time speaks to the transformative power of this investment. Children who had nearly lost hope behind tent walls have reclaimed their childhood and revived their dreams.

This project was implemented in partnership with:

• Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation
• Ministry of Education
• Education Branch Office
• Education Cluster
• Pure Hands Yemen Relief (implementing partner)

The school has been officially handed over to the Ministry of Education Branch Office, ensuring long-term operational sustainability and government oversight.

The Sana Foundation School Project demonstrates how strategic investment in education infrastructure can create lasting change. By providing not just a building, but a complete educational ecosystem, we’ve created a foundation for community development that will yield benefits for decades to come.
